电影筛选这是一档介绍住在中国的外国人拍摄住在全世界的中国人和住在日本的中国人的旅行式纪录片。由主持人阿部力或者导演竹内亮，带着观众们去拜访住在各地的主人公，了解他们的生活，找寻他们选择住在这里的理由。
基于各种原因，自幕府末期至昭和初期，日本大批穷苦人家的女孩被贩卖到南洋当妓女，世称“南洋姐”。她们的命运坎坷，受尽人世间的屈辱。有些人客死他乡，有些即使回到故乡，却仍要承受世俗鄙夷的目光。 女性史学家三谷圭子（栗原小卷 饰）为了调查和解开这段历史，走访了九州天草的崎津町 ，不过她的采访并不顺利，曾经历那个年代的老人们对此皆闭口不谈，讳莫如深。偶然间，她在路边冷饮店邂逅曾当过南洋姐的阿崎婆（田中绢代 饰），经过一段时间的试探和交往，原本紧锁心门的老婆婆终于向圭子敞开心扉，一同回首那段不堪回首的悲伤往事…… 改编自山崎朋子的小说《山打根8号娼馆 底层女性史序章（サンダカン八番娼館- 底辺女性史序章）》，影片荣获1973年亚太电影节最佳影片奖、1975年柏林国际电影节最佳女演员奖等多个奖项。
