电影筛选The Second World War was the most destructive conflict in history, laying waste not only to Europe’s people but also its infrastructure, institutions and its moral foundations. Only at the war’s end was the true scale of human suffering and misery revealed, and so devastating was the scene that Europe was dubbed ‘The New Dark Continent'. But for civilians in particular, liberation often marked not the end of their troubles but the beginning of new ones, with famine and disease widespread and an atmosphere thick with ethnic tension and revenge. This film will re-examine the aftermath of the War to ask if too much stress has been laid on an optimistic view of victory in Europe with celebratory images of VE day and newsreel coverage of the liberation of places like Paris. While narratives of hope and reconciliation are important, are parallel stories showing the darker side of peace yet to receive due prominence? Liberation was bitter, bloody and vengeful, and there were profound and pervasive fears that the peace could be lost. Through rare archive and unique personal testimony, this film reveals the ‘poisoned peace’ of 1945 to throw light on a post-war Europe where civilisation teetered on the brink of chaos, but the story of the transition from war to peace forms the hinge on which modern European history turns.
Katherine of Alexandria, brought up as a nomad and living in the desert, was aged just 11 when Emperor Maxentius saw her whilst out on patrol. Still obsessed with her beauty, Maxentius brought Katherine before 50 of Rome's finest scholars in an open court in Alexandria, where she eloquently demolished their arguments. When Constantine learned of Katherine's whereabouts and imprisonment at the hands of Maxentius, he led his army from York in a desperate bid to save her.

Just after the First World War Fred Roberts goes for a job as a newspaper journalist and tells the sub-editor how, in the trenches in 1916, he discovered a printing press in working order. Helped by ex-printer Sergeant Harris and with his friend Jack Pearson as his assistant, he sets up the Wipers Times - the name coming from the soldiers' pronunciation of the town Ypres. Despite disapproval from officious Colonel Howfield but with backing from sympathetic General Mitford they produce twenty-three issues of a satirical magazine - its articles represented on screen in black and white - which boosts morale and even gets mentioned in the Tatler. The press is destroyed by a German shell but another is found and the paper's title changed to fit in with wherever the regiment is deployed.

James starts his coast-to-coast odyssey in Mumbai, one of India's greatest cities. A white-knuckle auto rickshaw journey through the bustling streets in the company of top stand-up comedian Aditi Mittal leads James to a roasting at a nearby comedy club. Attempting to find his feet after this bruising experience, James explores Dharavi, India's biggest slum which, despite its challenges, is buzzing with determined entrepreneurs and an uplifting community spirit. Next up, in a confusing and hilarious encounter, James meets one of the last great Bollywood poster artists and has a go at creating his own vision of a blockbuster. A traditional fortune teller warns James of the perils of the journey ahead before he sets out on a 500-mile trek into Rajasthan and Udaipur, the fabled city of lakes. Here, a serene morning in the company of India's champion kite flyer descends into apocalyptic chaos as James and the crew battle the elements. As dusk falls, James cycles into the old city for the explosive and fiery ritual of Holika Dan. The episode ends with the wild and colourful celebration of Holi, where the whole city comes together to dance to earth-shattering beats in a kaleidoscopic array of paints and powders.
