电影筛选Volker Schlöndorff transposes Bertolt Brecht’s late-expressionist work to latter-day 1969. Poet and anarchist Baal lives in an attic and reads his poems to cab drivers. At first feted and later rejected by bourgeois society, Baal roams through forests and along motorways, greedy for schnapps, cigarettes, women and men: ‘You have to let out the beast, let him out into the sunlight.’ After impregnating a young actress he soon comes to regard her as a millstone round his neck. He stabs a friend to death and dies alone. ‘You are useless, mangy and wild, you beast, you crawl through the lowest boughs of the tree.’ The film takes youthful impetuousness and hatred of oppression as its subject and also ponders the cult of genius and sexual morals. Rainer Werner Fassbinder simultaneously plays both Baal and himself and is surrounded by many actors who were later to perform in his own films. After the film was broadcast on West German television, Brecht’s widow Helene Weigel prohibited any further screenings, arguing that the social circumstances engendering Baal’s rebelliousness had not been adequately explained.

Two working class youtubers ‘in the making’ enter an abandoned mansion to get their basketball back, and get lost inside while pranking each other. They record their ‘quick adventure’ with their phones for their audience, and tweak it with a fake phantom appearance to attract more followers to their YouTube channel. When uploaded the video goes viral, so they start a challenge: if the video reaches a certain number of views, they will enter the house again, at night, alone, totally unprotected. As fans react positively, they will do as promised, not only to discover and unveil the true nature of the place and their inhabitants, but to realize they might not be among the living anymore. Which opens a question - how far would you go to be famous?
Enea, Aeneas, pursues the myth that his name bears. He does it to feel alive in a dead and decadent age. He does it in the company of Valentino, a newly christened aviator. Together with the drug dealing and the parties, the two boys share their youth. Lifelong friends, victims and perpetrators of a corrupt world, but moved by an incorruptible vitality. Beyond the boundaries of the rules, on the other side of morality, there’s an ocean of humanity and symbols to discover. Enea and Valentino will soar over it to the furthest extremes. But the drugs and the underworld are the invisible shadow of a story that speaks of something else: a melancholy father, a brother who has conflicts at school, a mother defeated by love and a beautiful girl, a happy ending and a happy death, a palm tree falling on a world made of glass. It is between the cracks of everyday life that Enea and Valentino’s adventure gradually finds reprieve. An adventure that may seem criminal to others, but which for them is, and will be first and foremost, an adventure of friendship and love.
