April 2020 – Lockdown. Etienne, a film director, and his brother Paul, a music journalist, are confined together in their childhood home with their new partners Morgane and Carole. Every room, every object, reminds them of their childhood, and the memories of the absents - their parents, their neighbors…This compels them to measure the distance that separates them from each other and the roots they share, those of their ground zero. As the world around them is becoming increasingly unsettling, unreality, and even a disturbing strangeness, invades their daily gestures and actions.

The story follows in the wake of Carole whose world falls down around her when she finds herself fighting the ultimate battle: namely, saving the life of her son Martin, who has witnessed the abuses committed by powerful palm oil companies in Borneo and who has been wrongfully sentenced to death following a rigged trial.

Written by the director himself, the story revolves around an “absent” hero: an astronaut lost in the emptiness of space. His absence is spoken about indirectly here, from planet Earth. He was the nation’s son, loved and admired by all. But he’s primarily always on the mind of his little sister Elsa, who’s the real “fully present” heroine in this story. Elsa has lived her life and her childhood by proxy, sustaining herself off the dreams and ambitions of her older brother and hero. He was her point of reference and her daily inspiration. While he floats around, somewhere up there, in the ether, Elsa also drifts, right here on Earth…

故事发生在车水马龙灯红酒绿的大都市巴黎，来自乡村的少年来此投奔哥哥乔治（蒂埃里·钮维 Thierry Neuvic 饰），却因为不知道哥哥公寓的密码而被关在了门外，就在这时，哥哥的女友安（朱丽叶·比诺什 Juliette Binoche 饰）出现在了少年的面前，带少年进入了公寓。 少年粗暴的对待乞丐玛利亚（吕明妮塔·杰尔吉乌 Luminita Gheorghiu 饰），遭到了黑人教师阿玛度（Ona Lu Yenke 饰）的严厉批评，之后，警察来了，反而逮捕的玛利亚和阿玛度。玛利亚因此而返回自己位于罗马尼亚的家乡，回到了丈夫道格拉斯（Bob Nicolescu 饰）身边。安的隔壁住了一个被虐待的孩子，向安求救，安不知该如何是好。镜头下的人们，每个人都有着自己的故事。
其貌不扬的中年男人米切尔（法布莱斯·鲁奇尼 Fabrice Luchini 饰），他的职业是巡回法院的庭长。在业内，米切尔有着“两位数庭长”的昵称，因为凡是他经手的案件，被告人被判刑的年份均超过两位数。 这一次，米切尔要面对一桩非常棘手的案件，案件中的死者，是一名年仅7个月大的婴儿。在审理案件的同时，米切尔还要应付自己顽固的感冒。陪审席上坐着形形色色的陪审员们，其中，一个熟悉的面孔吸引了米切尔的注意，她就是蒂特（西瑟·巴比特·科努德森 Sidse Babett Knudsen 饰），蒂特是一名医生，曾经照顾过生病主演的米切尔。蒂特的存在让米切尔开始格外认真的审视起这桩扑朔迷离，似乎另有隐情的案件。
