Dr. Nathaniel Shellner, 75, has led an extraordinary life as a psychiatrist working with traumatized patients fleeing war zones in refugee camps, earning a Nobel Prize for his work. After having one child, Leonard, with his wife, Lillian, the Shellners adopt the remainder of their family from the camps where Dr. Shellner worked. Ultimately the Shellners incorporated children from all over the world into their family: Tommy, Julie, Harry. As Dr. Shellner succumbs to cancer on a frigid, icy day, the family convenes at the house where the couple raised the children for a final, bittersweet farewell. Or, that’s the idea until all hell breaks loose after Tommy arrives and accuses his father of adopting his children not out of concern for their future well-being, but to use them for some warped psychological experiment…

A group of Chicago cops are involved in a raid from which $3,000,000 disappears. The local mob go after them and the body count starts to rise. The new Chief of Police makes it clear to the last remaining officer that he will look the other way if he takes the law into his own hands. When the policeman finds he can't follow through on this someone else does and he finds himself and his girl are being hunted by more or less everyone for their own reasons. Amanda Fuller is dynamite in Simon Rumley's (Red, White & Blue) mind-bending gothic psychodrama about a fashion-obsessed woman whose life falls spectacularly apart. You're unlikely to see many better performances this year than Amanda Fuller's mesmerising turn as April, a 30-something whose self-image and perception of life is determined by the vintage clothes she wears and sells at a funky emporium in Austin, Texas with husband Eric (Freak Me Out favourite Ethan Embry; The Devil's Candy, SFF 2016; Cheap Thrills, SFF 2013). When Eric strays, a devastated April meets Randall, a smooth-talker with a predilection for strange sexual games. That's just the start of this dazzlingly filmed and superbly edited journey into real and imagined worlds. A killer soundtrack rounds out the best film yet by genre-mashing British ace Simon Rumley (The Living and the Dead).
